You know where I really want to go first? I wanna see Rome. Ever since i’ve seen La Bella Grandezza I wanted to go. The eternal city is just more than amazing. I want to experience that dolce vita, I want to sample the pizzas, the gelatto… i wann throw coins in the Trevi Fountain. Above all I want to visit the Colosseum.
It stands so proud in th very heart of the city. Still stands after 2.000 years. It once was the true heart of an empire spaning three continents. It is the archetype of all arenas throughout the world. For me it is fascinating beyond measure.
I had latin at school and I always hated it. All that learning my heart, without ever speaking. It always made me long for the real thing. I heard that they speak latin in the Vatican – and St. Peter’s Basilica is certainly on my list. But seriously – I wanna stand on the sand in the Colosseum and imagine I was a gladiator… or rather gladiatoress (is there such a thing even?
I heard that now you can visit the catacombs below on special (pricey) tours, but for me that would be all worth it. I want to feel like gladiator, sorry gladiatoress right before battle. I want to imagine the smell of the animals, some of them probably already dead, the sweat and blood of the other gladiators. Would you be able to hear the crowd above?
To me it is almost inconceivable how a building so grand survived for so long. Well there is the fact, that it once almost burned down. So what we see today, is in fact not the original bulding anymore. But that is all right. The floor is gone, as are the marble benches covering the arena. The imperial box and its probably outstanding splendor is only a footnote now. But still – for me it would be all there.
The circus maxiums is not too far away. And certainly I want to visit that as well. Horses were never my thing, but I heard the site is impressive. Well then…Rome I wanna come!
